At École Greenview School there is a school-wide effort to have all students demonstrate measurable growth in literacy through the use of reading and writing strategies throughout the curriculum. Their growth is measured by school-based and Edmonton Public Schools assessments, as well as Alberta Education Achievement Tests.
We undertook this endeavor beginning in the 2001 - 2002 school year with Reading Comprehension being the single focus. We introduced the reading strategy QAR, which stands for Question, Answer, Relationship. Over the following two years, we added the strategies of Finding Main Idea, Understanding Sequence, Recalling Facts and Details, Recognizing Cause and Effect, Distinguishing Between Fact and Opinion, Comparing and Contrasting, Making Predicitions, Word Meaning in Context, Identifying Author's Purpose, Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences, Distinguishing Between Real and Make-believe, and Interpreting Figurative Language. To enhance reading comprehension, writing as a strategy was introduced in September 2005. This moved our focus to the more encompassing focus of Literacy.
The teachers are training in the use of Six Plus 1 Writing Traits as Professional Development in the area of writing. As well, the Kindergarten and Grade One teachers of both the English Program and the French Immersion Program are receiving training in Balanced Literacy, an approach to the teaching of language arts. |
