Junior ATB Program

Junior ATB Financial

So what is the Junior ATB program? It’s a small scale bank, operated by students in grades 4 – 6 here at Greenview and modelled after the actual ATB Financial Institution. This hands-on program for our students offers them the opportunity to gain real life work experience, improve their mathematical skills through real world application and to learn the importance of saving money as well as develop their teamwork skills (even completing a job application and going through an interview). It supports our work in Career Pathways, a District initiative designed to build awareness, understanding and readiness for a pathway that helps students find dignity and fulfillment in life. (Find additional information on career pathways at: http://www.epsb.ca/ourdistrict/topics/careerpathways/)

The hiring process to get students in grades 4 – 6 motivated to be involved in this innovative program will happen with Job application forms going home. Interviews for both the Student Board of Directors and the day-to-day banking staff will take place followed by the Grand Opening Assembly and banking days.

The École Greenview School Junior ATB program will operate under the guidance of Mr. Hansen, Mr. Stanley and ATB Millwoods Team Members:  Shameer Gilani (Branch Manager), Kayla Groot (Assistant Branch Manager) and Rebeka Earl (Personal Banking Specialist) as well as other branch staff.

The ATB banking group does not make any money on this partnership. In fact, they give the Greenview Junior ATB Board members $500 to disperse through a grant application process to the teachers. In addition, two ATB bank employees come to the school on banking days and volunteer their time during the lunch hour club supporting the students and school. Then they take the deposits back to the bank for the ‘actual’ deposit. ATB’s partnership is about wanting to be a good community citizen and focus on youth in Alberta so that they build the foundation for financial literacy and economic self-reliance in adulthood.

Every student from grades 1 – 6 in our school will receive a Junior ATB account application package. This program is STRICTLY voluntary as a number of students have a savings account already set up at the bank of your choice.
